Lithuania is a country with many draws: its historical past and diverse architecture, as well as beautiful natural surroundings, large coastline and SPA resorts. The capital city Vilnius is famous for its baroque-filled Old Town, which has been renowned as a UNESCO heritage. It is also one of Europe's least expensive cities, making it an ideal vacation spot for budget travellers. Additionally, the Curonian Spit's breathtaking views and dunes as well as the seaside's sandy beaches, where amber may be found, attract visitors.
There are a couple of things to know before travelling to Lithuania:
Water: Tap water is considered safe to drink in Lithuania.
Driving: Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. The main speed limits are as follows: 50 kph / 30 mph on main roads within built-up areas, 90 kph / 55 mph on concrete roads outside urban areas, 120 kph / 74 mph on the expressway ('greitkelis') from April 1st to October 31st (110 kph / 68 mph otherwise), 130 kph / 80 mph on motorway ('automagistralė') from April 1st to October 31st (110 kph / 68 mph otherwise). Cars must keep headlights lit throughout the day.
Plugs: Two plug types are used in Lithuania: C and F, which both have two grounding holes. Lithuania operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency.
Tipping: As a general rule – although welcome – tipping is not compulsory nor expected in restaurants and cafés in Lithuania. If you appreciated the service, it is common to tip about 10% of the bill.
Payment: Bank cards – either debit or credit cards – are widely accepted across Lithuania, the most common ones being Visa and Mastercard. American Express cards can be used in fewer places. The use of cash money is still very common, especially for low-value purchases and/or rural areas, so it is a good idea to keep a small number of bills and coins with you.
Basic language: Sveiki / Labas = Hello, Gera Diena = Good day; Viso gero = Goodbye; Taip = Yes; Ne = No; Ačiū = Thank you; Labai ačiū = Thank you very much; Prašau = Please; Sveikas = You're welcome; Atsiprašau = Excuse me; Dieną= Day; Naktis = Night; Labas vakaras = Good evening; Labos nakties = Goodnight; Pone = Mister; Ponia = Ma'am
Holidays and closing days: Many shops in Lithuania are open daily, especially major shopping centres; smaller businesses might close on Sunday. There are 13 official public holidays in Latvia: New Year’s Day (January 01), Restoration of the State Day (February 16), Restoration of Independence Day (March 11), Easter, Labour Day (May 01), Mother's Day (May 02), Father's Fay (June 06), St. John's Day (June 24), Anniversary of the Coronation of King Mindaugas (July 06), Assumption (August 15), All Saints' Day (November 01), All Souls' Day (November 02), Christmas (December 24-26). On these days, some businesses and offices will be closed, and many attractions may be shut or have limited opening hours.
