Sweden is a Scandinavian country made up of huge boreal woods, glacial mountains, and countless coastal islands and inland lakes. The nation's capital, Stockholm, as well as Gothenburg and Malmö in the southwest are all coastal cities. Stockholm is made up of 14 islands and has over 50 bridges, a medieval old town called Gamla stan, royal palaces, and museums such as the Skansen open-air museum.
There are a couple of things to know before travelling to Sweden:
Water: Tap water is considered safe to drink in Sweden.
Driving: Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. The main speed limits are as follows: ranging from 30 kph / 18 mph to 70 kph / 43 mph within towns and cities, ranging from 70 kph / 43 mph to 90 kph / 56 mph on main roads outside built-up areas, 110 kph / 68 mph or 120 kph / 74 mph on motorways. Car headlights must be on at all times and set to a dipped beam.
Plugs: Two plug types are used in Sweden: C and F, which both have two grounding holes. France operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency.
Tipping: As a general rule - although welcome - tipping is not compulsory nor expected in restaurants and cafés in Sweden.
Payment: Bank cards - either debit or credit cards - are widely accepted across Sweden, the most common ones being Visa and Mastercard. American Express cards can be used in fewer places. Sweden is an almost cashless country.
Basic language: Hallå = Hello, God morgon = Good morning; Adjö = Goodbye; Ja = Yes; Nej = No; Tack = Thank you; Tack så mycket = Thank you very much; Snälla du = Please; Varsågod = You're welcome; Förlåt = Sorry; Do = Day; Natt = Night; God kväll = Good evening; Godnatt = Goodnight; Gata = Street; Väg = Road
Holidays and closing days: Sunday is a closing day for many small stores; grocery stores and malls are usually open. Moreover, many shops have shorter opening hours on Saturday compared to the rest of the week. There are 11 official public holidays in Sweden: New Year's Day (January 01), Epiphany (January 06), Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (May 01), Ascension Day, Whit Sunday, National Day (June 06), Midsummer Day, All Saints' Day (November 05), Christmas (December 24-26). On these days, most businesses and offices will be closed, and many attractions may be shut or have limited opening hours.
